Snap Maps Explained: How to Use It (And Stay Safe)

Snap Map is an interactive, built-in feature on Snapchat that allows you to share your real-time or last-active location with friends and view user-submitted content from around the world. While it is a fun tool for coordinating meetups or exploring global events, sharing precise geolocation data presents substantial stalking, burglary, and privacy risks if it is not properly managed. How Snap Map Works

Accessing the Map: Open the main Snapchat camera screen and pinch your fingers together (zoom out) to pull up the map interface.

Location Tracking: Your location updates every time you open the app, rather than tracking you continuously in the background, unless you explicitly enable permanent live sharing.

Bitmoji Avatars: Your custom cartoon avatar (Bitmoji) will appear on your friends’ maps at your exact coordinates, alongside a timestamp showing when you were last active.

Data Expiration: If you do not open Snapchat for 24 hours, your Bitmoji automatically disappears from your friends’ maps until you launch the app again. Privacy Settings & How to Use Them

Snapchat map features are opt-in, meaning you must intentionally choose who can view your whereabouts. You can modify your visibility at any time by tapping the gear icon in the top-right corner of the Snap Map screen. Snap Map Privacy & Safety Reminder – Snapchat Support
